As lacrosse gets underway throughout the country, US Lacrosse wants to arm athletes, coaches and parents with tips to minimize injury risk and maximize their lacrosse experience in 2012.

“We’ll be working with the US Lacrosse staff to let the lacrosse community know that there are numerous resources available that could help educate all stakeholders about safety and sportsmanship issues,” said Angelo Calvello, chair of the USL men’s game safety subcommittee.

This initiative emphasizes a different safety- or sportsmanship-related theme every three months. For more on the first quarter topics of concussions, visit uslacrosse.org/safety.

Both Girls and Boys are welcome to Participate!

Come out and see what the fastest sport on two feet is all about.

Registration is open for K-8th grade. No equipment is required to participate. All levels of experience are welcome to attend. If you already have a stick please bring it. Register your child’s attendance by Friday January 27th at panhandlelax@yahoo.com.

One of the coach's greatest challenges is to integrate the individual goals of an athlete into the team concept.  Challenging the youth's individual desire to be independently successful into "Together Everyone Achieves More".

Molding individuals into a team is still a formidable task for the coach. Most youth sports coaches realize winning is not everything, and yet it is the reward for performing better than the opposition and a sign of a well-prepared (coached) team. Most youth sports in our area exist for the sole purpose of educating and introducing youth to a particular sport, not winning. However when there has to be a winner and a loser teams and individuals should have the integrity to do their best to win as a team, and this is often identified as a team's "chemistry"

So what is good chemistry for a team?   This simply means that most, if not all, of the individuals on the team focus as a unit on the same goal and concentrate on being there for each other. They want to do well individually, but they are more concerned with the team goals than individual achievements.  It takes a very good manager and organization to get everybody on the same page. The best coaches often do it, but it also takes the cooperation of the young athletes and support of their families.

From experience, I know there is no better feeling as a coach to win a championship or to have a successfull season when all the players have contributed and have collectivley pulled for one another to reach that goal.

Throwing footballs, serving volleyballs and fielding grounders are just a few of the sports techniques you can help your child hone at home. But with so many examples of poor sportsmanship on television how do you work in those all important lessons on being a good sport?

Take the reins: When it comes to teaching the importance of good sportsmanship, don’t leave it up to the coach. If you observe your child behaving in an inappropriate manner, address the situation immediately. Regardless of what the coach says to your child you must make it clear that bad sportsmanship is not acceptable. If the problem isn’t addressed immediately, it will happen again. And remember, it could get worse.

Ask questions: On the ride home from a game, ask your child specific questions that elicit more than “yes” and “no” responses. For example, if a player on the other team demonstrated poor sportsmanship, ask your child how she felt when she witnessed it. Use these moments to reinforce how bad a player looked behaving inappropriately.

Use TV as a teacher: While watching games with your child don’t just talk about the great plays that are made, discuss the great displays of sportsmanship that you both see, too. This helps make it clear to your young athlete just how important being a good sport is at all levels of athletic competition.

A Sporting Perspective

As our winter sports seasons begin in early December I thought it would be good to reflect on the meaning of "perspective" when it comes to sports. I think we could all agree that it is necessary to keep life passions like sports in perspective. However, what "keeping it in perspective" means for one person (coach, player, parent, fan) can be different from another person's view. With this in mind, I recommend using the following five points to help with defining what it means to "keep it in perspective" as far as sports are concerned.

1. Always keep in mind the age of the players.

2. Ensuring the physical and emotional health of the child is always most important.
3. Realizing that sports are only games and one aspect of many aspects of a child's life, and not the most important one.
4. Always remembering that it is the player's not the adults, career.
5. Understanding competition creates emotions, but these emotions should never override good judgment about the four previous points.

Not everyone is coming for the same perspective at a sporting event or activity. So,l it is necessary for people to communicate with each other about their perspectives, in an adult manner, so players and teams have positive playing experiences throughout their careers.

Early season snow storm postpones soccer league finale

Wintry precipitation on Saturday morning kept the Mini Soccer and Ultimate Youth soccer players from taking the fields at Old National Pike District Park. Mini Soccer is for 4-6 yr olds while the Ultimate Soccer League has teams consisting of 7-12 yr olds. Saturday 10/29 was to be the final week for both leagues; however poor visiblity and rolling soccer snow-balls - although fun would have hindered actual game-play. Make-up games will take place at Old National District Park this Saturday 11/5 at their regularly scheduled times and field location. League Officials would like to remind parents and coaches to check the Program Status Line, 301-600-6291, in times of inclement weather.

Self-Discipline

Youth sports builds self-discipline among young people. The commitment to a team and simply making it to each practice is a first step for many young athletes. In order to be successful in sports, kids often practice the same techniques over and over to acquire proficiency. Learning in-bounds plays for basketball, the nickle defense in football, or even the proper hand off technique for a 4x100 relay requires focused attention and dedicated practice to achieve success.

Self-Confidence

Participation in youth sports provides an arena for confidence development. Self-confidence does not come naturally to all children. Interestingly, one of the best ways to develop self-confidence is to be placed in challenging situations. Challenges provide an opportunity for kids to discover solutions on their own, and reap the consequences of whichever solution they choose. Participating in youth sports presents such opportunities over and over again--how to score on a breakaway in soccer, how to beat a defender in a fast break in basketball, or even how to talk to a teammate about his habit of not passing the ball often enough. Challenges, whether physical or emotional, can develop confidence in children.
Builds Strong Relationships

Participation in youth sports provides ample opportunities for kids to build strong friendships with their peers and mentoring relationships with their coaches. Young athletes benefit from working together to reach various goals. Players learn to put the team before their individual interests, which develops the quality of selflessness. Teams of athletes do not always get along perfectly, and putting aside differences to play effectively together is another important lesson to be used throughout life.

The relationships between players and their coaches can be powerful. Players look to coaches for guidance both on and off the field, seeking advice on improving their performance as well as succeeding in school. Players come to trust their coaches, and coaches serve as role models and counselors for players.

Builds a Healthy Body

When children play sports they develop an understanding of what their bodies can do. Young athletes are often fearless, sacrificing their bodies to block a shot or dive for a loose ball. Playing with this kind of abandon can be healthy, and it promotes a trust in their bodies' abilities. Regular games and practices build strong bones and muscles. When athletes are young, the focus should be on learning, fun and fitness.

10 Ways to Be a Good Sport

1. Be polite to everyone you're playing with and against. No trash talk — which means saying mean things while you're in the middle of a game.

2. Don't show off. Just play your best. If you're good, people will notice.

3. Tell your opponents "good game!" whether you've won or you've lost.

4. Learn the rules of the game. Show up for practices and games on time — even if you're the star of the team.

5. Listen to your coaches and follow their directions about playing.

6. Don't argue with an official if you don't agree with his or her call. If you don't understand a certain call, wait until after the game to ask your coach or the official to explain it to you.

7. Don't make up excuses or blame a teammate when you lose. Try to learn from what happened.

8. Be willing to sit out so other team members can get in the game — even if you think you're a better player.

9. Play fair and don't cheat.

10. Cheer for your teammates even if the score is 1,000 to 1! You could inspire a big comeback!

Teams of 6 players compete to earn a spot in the July 2012 Maryland State Tournament hosted by the USTA. The Health Benefits of Exercise for our Children!

There are many health benefits for children that engage in exercise. The American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, National Institutes of Health, the Mayo Clinic and Medscape note that children who exercise on a regular or semi-regular basis are likely to have:

Controlled weight
Greater bone density, healthy muscles and joints
Rise in High Density Lipids (HDL) which is “good” cholesterol
Lowered blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure
Higher metabolic rate and faster burn of calories
Better sleep
Improved psychological well being
Children who do not exercise are at much higher risk for negative health outcomes, especially chronic disease.

A large-scale study conducted by the NIH (published July 15, 2008) found that physical activity levels drop dramatically between the ages of 9 and 15. Inactive children, when compared with active children, weigh more, have higher blood pressure and lower levels of heart-protective high-density lipoproteins (HDL cholesterol). July 7th's summer high school basketball league semi final games are over. The two tops teams remaining are Linganore and Walkersville. Linganore easily defeated Poolesville Wednesday night with a score of 56 to 20. Walkersville and Urbana on the other hand had a close game all the way to the end with the final score, Walkersville 44 and Urbana 43.

The Fainal League Championship Game of the summer season is scheduled for Monday July 12th at 7 pm at the Tuscarora Recreation Center. Great season so far guys, keep it up!

High school Basketball League Semi Finals

Linganore, Poolesville, Urbana, and Walkersville remain in the hunt for this year's Summer High School Basketball league Champions. Linganore edged out Catoctin on June 30th beating them 68 to 28. Oakdale lost a close game against Poolesville 63 to 56. Urbana High beat Brunswick 58 to 47 and Tuscarora lost a very close game to Walkersville 53 to 47.

The semi finals begin on July 7th with Linganore and Poolesville and Urbana and Walkersville each playing each other at the Tuscarora Recreation Center.

Whoever wins each game will face off on Monday July 12th for the Title of Frederick County Parks and Recreations Summer High School Basketball League Champion.

Everyone is busy and in this day and age it is not always possible to sign up for a multi-week league commitment. Here at Frederick County Parks and Recreation we understand that completely. At each of our Recreation Centers we offer a variety of Drop-In Programs for the individual or family who wants to stay active, but has not the time to commit to a multi-week program or simply does not wish the fee associated with a scheduled league or program. Over 30 basketball is very popular. Men and Women are welcome to come out to Centerville Rec Center and Tuscarora Rec Centers on Sunday's from 7-9 pm and on Wednesdays at Middletown Rec Center.

Over 25 basketball is a program held every Monday at Deer Crossing Rec Center from 7-9 pm. It is extremely popular and participants have a fantastic time playing games, being competitive and staying active during this two hour activity.

Over 35 basektball is also a very popular drop in. It is held at Oakdale Recreation Center on Thursdays from 7-9 pm.

Other drop in programs such as adult volleyball and family and friends drop in are open to you and your family. Coaches Go Head-to-Head in Basketball Challenge

Carroll Manor and Ballenger Creek Coaches invite you to join them in a fun and competitive basketball game to benefit the Frederick Rescue Mission. In order to promote unity and service the Carroll Manor Athletic Association and Ballenger Creek Recreation Council are coming together to support a local charity that makes a positive impact on the community—the Frederick Rescue Mission—for the work they do locally, and also because the harsh winter has been hard on the homeless and needy in the community the Mission serves.

Join the fans and families on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 5pm at the Tuscarora High School Main Gym. Tickets into the game are $2 for teens under 16, $3 for people over 16, and $5 for families regardless of size.

The program is a great tool to help prepare coaches for the expectations they face by participating in a program within our activities. Listed below are some of the benefits from this program. I encourage any organization, as they plan a league or program where volunteer coaches or instructors are necessary, to contact the local Character Counts Instructor George Guevara at email address: gguevara@frederickymca.org.
Some of the benefits of the Character Counts Program are:

· Coaches learn expectations from your organization
· Increased Sportsmanship among coaches

· Increased communication between the league administration, officials, coaches, parents and participants

·Coaches sign a Code of Conduct form where standards set by your organization are identified

General Safety Tips for Coaches and Program Organizers

Many of Frederick County's Athletic Associations and Recreation Council's are in the midst of another exciting Basketball season. With each season there are hazards and standard safety precations that each organization should take to ensure the safety and positive experience of each participant. Frederick County Parks and Recreation has developed a "Safety Tip" list that should become the standard for each program no matter the season. Please pass these valuable procedures on to your organization.

Check with facility (program location) for their recommended safety procedures.

Before the program starts, check all equipment and facilities for safety hazards.

Train volunteers and program leaders in health and safety plans.

Volunteers, and if possible participants, should provide information about relevant medical conditions.

Volunteers, and participants should furnish emergency contact information to the onsite coaches and program leaders.

All volunteers and program leaders who have direct contact with participants should under go a background investigation.

Each program should have a readily available 1st aid kit.

Volunteers and program leaders should hold current certifications in infant, child, and adult CPR, 1st Aid and AED.

2009 GoodSports Award Recipients Announced

Two Frederick County residents will be honored on Monday evening, February 15, at the Maryland State House in Annapolis for the fourth annual "Mid-Atlantic Recreation and Parks Sports Alliance (MARPSA) GoodSports Awards Ceremony." Both candidates, one a coach from Woodsboro New/Midway Recreation Council and the other a basketball participant from Ballenger Creek Recreation Council , were selected by the Frederick County Division of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Frederick County Association of Recreation Councils.

Tom Fraley will be recognized for his active participation as a coach with the Woodsboro/New Midway Recreation Council in the areas of basketball, softball, and baseball over the past several years. His dedication to the children in our community has been described as "extraordinary."

Amanda Fioravanti, a former student at Ballenger Creek Middle School this past year, participated as a member of the Ballenger Creek Recreation Council's Lady Bulldogs Mid Maryland Basketball Team. Amanda led the Lady Bulldogs last year to a 16-1 record and a Division Championship, the best ever with the Mid Maryland Ballenger Creek Recreation Council Program.

The MARPSA GoodSports Award program provides an opportunity for member agencies to recognize both young athletes and coaches who have modeled GoodSports behaviors in local athletics. The Association of Recreation Council's participation in the GoodSports Award program has created a way to honor all athletic based recreation council's in Frederick County. Recreation Council's in Frederick submit nominees and from those nominees, two are selected, one to represent coaches, and one to represent athletes. Both are then honored at this ceremony in Annapolis along with other coaches and athletes from all over the state.

Frederick County Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Association of Recreation Council's congratulates both Amanda and Tom for their outstanding sportsmanship.
