Pass, Shoot, and Score your way to a fantastic time during this one wek camp. Experienced lacrosse coaches will provide the in depth hands on training each and every day. Participants will learn and enhance basic fundamental skills through drills, and simulated game play. All participants are required to provide their own equipment. NFL YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE

This is a 5vs5 league, with teams of up to 10 players. Jersey and flag belts will be provided.

Games will be played on Saturdays at Ballenger Creek, Utica and/or Urbana District Parks.

Volunteer coaches are needed and will receive a discount upon completion and approval of background screening.

Game times to be announced. Practices will be held one night a week according to the schedule in brochure. All

participants must wear a mouthpiece. Only carpool requests will be accepted and only at time of registration. Not all requests are granted.

Opening day is Saturday April 20th, game times vary between 9:00 am-3:00 pm (depending on team schedule).

MARPSA "Good Sports" Awards

MARPSA (Mid-Atlantic Recreation & Parks Sports Alliance) held their annual "Good Sports" Awards ceremony on Monday February 4th at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. The awards were presented to youth athletes, adult coaches and administrators from various counties in MD and VA. MARPSA promotes sportsmanship and ethical practices through the various agencies that serve as members. Each member agency selected from community submitted nominations for the categories of - Athlete, Coach and Administrator. Nikki Teasley, St. John's Prospect Hall, UNC & WNBA Alum gave the keynote speech to kick-off the ceremony.

For Frederick County - Perry Perret (above) from Carroll Manor Recreation Council was selected for the Administrator award. Cyrus Staub (left), who plays in our NFL Flag Football League and attends Thurmont Middle School, was selected for the Athlete award. Both awards were presented to the individuals for their leadership, sportsmanship and ethical perspective in regards to their involvement in youth sports here in Frederick County. Congratulations to both Perry and Cyrus!!

CO-ED Flag Football with FACKA

Our friends from FACKA (Fred. Adult Co-Ed Kickball Association) are offering Co-ed Flag Football this Spring. Signups are underway. Games are going to be played at Ballenger Creek Park on Saturday mornings and early afternoons starting April 20th. You are guaranteed 8 games. Playoffs if your team qualifies. Sign up for kickball AND Football at the same time and save $15. The cost for football is $50 and includes refs, fields, jerseys, insurance, equipment, etc.

The Frederick County Winter Indoor Soccer League will be starting back up in January!

We will be offering this league at three rec center locations this winter. Children will be divided up into teams depending on how many are registered and will play a game each saturday for 6 weeks.

Middletown Recreation Center on Saturdays, starting January 19th

FCPR NFL Flag League, for the 12-14 yr age division, closed out the fall season with a double-elimination tournament on Sat 11/17. 5 teams participated in the modified format tournament. NCAA Overtime rules were played for each 3-game series match-up. The Saints, seen below, coached by Mike Hargraves and Joe Wilt, were the last team standing at the end of the day. The Saints only lost 1 regular season game this year.

The Importance of FUN in Sports by Sara Robinson, MA

Having fun – it seems so simple, and it may be surprising to hear that fun is what made the difference for Michael Phelps in his ﬁnal Olympic Games. Fun is the reason many of our youth athletes begin playing sports, and sadly, lack of fun is one of the most often reported reasons why athletes leave sports. Many athletes end up quitting their sport at the onset of adolescence when other areas of life take on more importance, and if sports are no longer fun, they likely won’t want to stay.

Coaches have the ability to help sports remain fun, even when the level of competition becomes more serious and gets tougher. Here are a few ideas to help your athletes continue to have fun:

Encourage athletes to set their own goals. Motivation is higher when athletes have a sense of control over what they are working on. Allow athletes to have some say in how practices are run.

You are the coach, and you can remain in control, but perhaps an athlete chooses one drill at the end of practice, or give them two choices and they can vote on which one they prefer.

Similar to setting goals, athletes will be more motivated and have more fun when they have a say in what goes on.

Praise effort and improvement, and spread positive reinforcement equally amongst your athletes. When athletes see that they are making progress, they are likely to be more inclined to continue to work harder and want to see more improvement; if they are mostly told what they’re doing wrong, this can take away the fun.

Notice if your athletes smile and laugh, or if they regularly look less than happy.

You can have athletes who not only take training seriously, but do so in an environment with laughter and fun. Maybe you plan team outings or team dinners, or celebrate birthdays on the ﬁeld after practice. Find ways to help your team enjoy spending time together.

Ask yourself: Am I having fun? If you aren’t, chances are this will affect how you are coaching your team. Find ways to have fun when you coach; talk with your assistant coaches or fellow coaches and think about how you and your athletes can have fun on the ﬁeld. Michael Phelps’ coach works hard but you can tell by watching him that he enjoys what he does.

Athletes who have fun and enjoy their experiences in sport will often stay involved longer than those who do not have fun on a regular basis. Getting to the Olympics, or high levels of sport performance, certainly requires more than just having fun, but chances are if the fun is lost then the athlete may not stay involved long enough to find out just how far he or she can go. Michael Phelps knows how important it is to “just have fun” and coaches are a great resource for helping athletes find and maintain fun as they train, prepare and compete.
